PROJECT THREE | part two

With this project we were given the opportunity to do whatever we wanted, our only parameter was to respect the historical exterior of the building. To get ideas for my building's use I used the surrounding area of downtown Durham as inspiration. There is a furniture store/frame shop down the street called TROSA. The people who work here are recovering drug addicts or alcoholics. TROSA gives them a job and a second chance at being able to support oneself and engaging in the community in a positive way. I decided to play off this idea for my building. I created a coffee shop/wine cafe with a loft apartment on the top two levels. My intention is to provide a few more jobs in downtown Durham for people who have just gotten out of any type of rehabilitation center. Also the loft apartment would be there to house someone or a couple who is trying to get back on their feet and start over with a new life. Here are the renderings of my 3D model I created of my space.

PROJECT THREE | part one

Project three became a short charette as we are running out of time in the fall semester. The site is the Historic Practice Fire Tower in Durham, NC. Below I have posted a few pictures of the exterior and interior of the building in its current condition.

PROJECT TWO | part eight

My partner and I have continued to manipulate the space.
We created a 3D model of the entire building.
Here are a few perspectives from the final model.

We are also assigned to create a Reflected Ceiling Plan for each level:

PROJECT TWO | part seven

While going through the design process we were directed to detail out four areas of our building. We decided to detail the spiral staircase, the material's library built-in, glass railing, and drop down ceiling panels.
Here are the images of these details:

Another aspect of our project that is a prominent feature are the drop down ceiling tiles we have installed. Each ceiling tile is three inches thick and the edges of each tile are curved in relation to the circle of the spiral staircase. The edges are also colored red to create a banding that runs through each space. The curved red wall also plays off of this curve. We have drawn up some floor plans to show this relationship within the space.

PROJECT TWO | part six

This part of the project was dedicated to putting all the components and ideas together. Our intentions are to use the CBI colors throughout the space to allow CBI to stand out and "be noted". We decided to use the basement floor as storage, but also a potential showroom area. The first floor is used as showroom space, the galley is placed here for easy entertaining, and the restroom is placed on this floor as well. The second floor houses the conference area, the materials library, and more showroom space. There is a cutout in the second level floor to be able to connect the two showroom spaces and enhance the lighting on the first floor. The red wall also continues through each of these floors to create unity within the building.
Here are a few images of the floor plans we have come up with.

For Design Development 2 we began looking at materials and color in our space.
Here are a few images from this development stage highlighting these choices.

PROJECT TWO | part four

We have had a design development one critique on October 9th 2009.
Here are the images we have showed during the critique.
